Exciting news hit the sporting world with the announcement that we will have sports once again this summer. Professional lacrosse has answered our prayers.

Gamblers across the country have been craving the chance to bet live sports. Like weening yourself off of an addiction at a methadone clinic, betting the over/under on temperature for Des Moines has not been able to fill the void left by sports.

In these lean times we can overlook what would certainly be a red-flag for a serious gambling problem. However, hope is on the horizon my friends. Hope in the form of professional lacrosse.

The Premier Lacrosse League announced Tuesday that they will be hosting a two week fan-less tournament to determine a 2020 league champion. It will be broadcasted on NBC and will run from July 25th – August 9th. The best part? They are integrating gambling into the live broadcast.

The league’s sophomore season was scheduled to begin on May 29th, however, like everything else in the world, it was delayed.

A statement released Tuesday detailed a two week quarantine tournament called the Championship Series to make up for the lost season.

PLL Championship Series will take shape in two parts. Throughout the first week, the league’s seven teams will compete in a fourteen-game group play format to determine seeding for the following week’s single-elimination tournament.

“The winner of the tournament will be crowned the 2020 PLL Champion. All twenty league games will be presented live across NBC, NBCSN, or NBC Sports Gold, with all televised games also streaming live on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.”

That same Tuesday, the PLL announced a partnership with Genius Sports Group as its, “Official Data and Integrity Partner for sports betting.”

Similar to the blueprint laid out by the XFL, the PLL and Genius Sports Group have combined gambling with the live in-game experience.

The CEO of Genius Sports Mark Locke talked about the PLL partnership.

“The PLL is committed to delivering the ultimate digital fan experience with sports wagering providing a new competitive outlet to interact with every play of every game.”

Archers attackman and PLL all-star Will Manny talked to me about what he expects the tournament to look like.

“I think its an awesome opportunity just to get together and be the only sport playing during that time on NBC—during the Olympic timeframe so a lot of people will be watching.”

Manny says that since the leagues inception in 2019, the PLL have toyed with the idea for gambling integration.

“There are people who have never watched the game of lacrosse and who love Las Vegas and they want to put money on the game,” said Manny. “The viewership will definitely increase.”

Personally, I am going to be putting down my rent money on the Archers.
