After nine seasons, three pro bowls, a Rookie of the Year award, a NFL MVP award, and a trip to the Super Bowl, the Cam Newton era is all but over for the Carolina Panthers.

The 2020 NFL league year started off with a bang in Carolina. First, Newton was given permission to seek a trade from the Panthers shortly after the NFL legal tampering period opened. Seemingly hours later, the Panthers agreed to a three-year, $63 million contract with veteran free agent Teddy Bridgewater, officially making Newton expendable.

The Panthers have yet to find a trade partner for the former No. 1 overall pick, but it’s only a matter of time before Newton has a new team — there is no way Carolina will commit $21.1 million in salary cap space to a player who won’t be starting for them this fall.

There are still plenty of teams in the market for help at quarterback, and Newton isn’t that far removed from playing at a very high level.

With that being said, here’s the teams with the best odds at having Newton under center in 2020, according to the oddsmakers at BetOnline.

Miami Dolphins (+250)

This scenario only makes sense to me if the Dolphins are truly all-in on selecting former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 NFL Draft. If they do, acquiring Newton would give them the ability to give Tagovailoa a true redshirt year while he continues to recover from the hip injury that cut short his final season in Tuscaloosa.

New England Patriots (+200)

This scenario is fairly self explanatory. The Patriots need a quarterback, and Newton is a proven commodity.

The only potential issues for me here?

Would Newton buy into ‘The Patriot Way’, and could he get along with a coach like Bill Belichick? There’s only one way to find out.

Washington Redskins (+150)

The Redskins do have Dwayne Haskins, their first round pick in 2019, on their roster, but their new coach, Ron Rivera, was Newton’s head coach in Carolina during his entire stint there.

Together, they led the Panthers to four playoff berths, three division titles, and one Super Bowl appearance.

To me, this scenario comes down to one question: Is Rivera interested in patiently grooming a talented, but raw, young quarterback at this point in his career? Probably not.

  • Jacksonville Jaguars (+900)
  • Denver Broncos (+1600)
  • Las Vegas Raiders (+1600)
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (+2800)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (+4000)
